8 Ellis teachers, 3 students at Ed-Tech Conference

As part of its ongoing strategic effort to equip faculty and students with innovative practices and technology to make girls active agents of their own learning, The Ellis School sent eight teachers and three Upper School students to the Three Rivers Educational Technology Conference (TRETC 2013) last week. Teachers from all divisions and disciplines attended as part of the School's commitment to bringing innovation, design thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving to every grade level and subject area. Dr. Palmieri and the three student members of the Ellis student Geek Squad also presented at the conference about how to launch student-led tech initiatives.
TRETC is the premier K-16 educational technology conference in Western Pennsylvania and attracts more than 350 educators from K-12 schools, higher education and nonprofits come to the event to learn together and explore new educational technologies. Dr. Lisa Abel Palmieri, who oversees instructional & informational technologies, computer science, and co-coordinates the innovation collaborative at Ellis, served on the TRETC 2013 planning board. The Ellis School engages students in technology as producers of content—not  just consumers—to create confidence and competence, and provide critical thinking opportunities.

Ellis faculty attending TRETC included: Mary Ann Diel, Middle School performing arts teacher; Andrea Christian-Michaels, Middle School reading specialist; Dr. Susan Corbesero, Upper School history teacher; Julie Lind, Lower School computer science teacher; Rick Malmstrom, Upper School history teacher; Belle Moldovan, Upper School art teacher; and Kristin Wilson, Upper School science teacher and co-chair of the Ellis science department. Corbesero, Diel, and Moldovan are also members of the Ellis School Partnership Collaborative, which organizes meaningful opportunities for Ellis students to engage in hands-on, project-based learning with leading nonprofits and for-profits in our region.

About the Geek Squad presentation: Dr. Palmieri and Ellis seniors/Geek Squad members Julia Granito, Naoka Gunawardena, and Liliane Kelly described how the Ellis Geek Squad was launched to help integrate technology into curriculum and provide tech support for peers and faculty. They provided information about how the group is structured, projects they have worked on, and their biggest takeaways from this experience.

TRETC 2013 is a joint conference run by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, local education leaders, and the Pittsburgh Technology Council. Learn more about the conference here:
