Coach K announces her retirement

In 1984 Fran Koch, then Director of the Upper School, bought some groceries at the Giant Eagle and learned that her check-out clerk, Genny Kozusko, was looking for full-time work in physical education. That day, Fran met a woman who would have a tremendous impact on our entire Athletic program as well as the lives of many Ellis graduates.  Coach K came to Ellis that year and has brought her enthusiasm, belief in every athlete, and “can do” attitude to all aspects of her work ever since.
Genny has decided to retire from her position as our Athletic Director at the end of this school year.  Happily, she will still follow the life passion she has had since age 17 – that of coaching.  Next year, Genny will continue as our Head Varsity Field Hockey Coach and will coach other sports in both the winter and spring seasons.

We are so pleased that she will remain a vital part of our athletic program as she starts to make the transition to other priorities in her life.  Her new priorities include continued volunteer work for her church, increasing the number of hilarious adventures with her grandchild, Roman, and more time with son Andy and daughter Amy (who graduated from Ellis in 1995).

Genny has been such an important part of our Ellis Community during her distinguished years of service.  She embodies sportsmanship, fairness, and abiding love and respect for the girls with whom she works. The girls feel this and respond in kind.  Banners hang in Janet’s Gym recognizing the great work she had done with our athletes and the Ellis Athletic program over these last 29 years. In 2000, Genny created the Ellis Athletic Hall of Fame to honor the Ellis athletes who, prior to Title IX, didn't receive the recognition that female athletes now receive such as WPIAL recognition, athletic scouting, and news coverage for their accomplishments. What a remarkable legacy and incredible role model she is for generations of Ellis women!

The Ellis School thanks Genny for all she has done to create a robust and inclusive athletic program for our Middle and Upper School girls; for the teaching she has led in physical education, health, and in the Senior Seminar; and for the myriad of things she does each day to be sure our athletic program is all that it can be – whether lining a field, driving a student to the hospital, or working with a parent, Genny has always operated from her belief in doing what is best for our program.  And, as Coach K said earlier this week, “The party’s not over yet. You’ll still get me every day after 3 p.m.”
