Ellis Junior Wins Gold Medal in Coraopolis NAACP ACT-SO Program

Enysah Roberts, Class of 2023, has been honored with a gold medal in the category of Biology/Microbiology as part of the first-annual Coraopolis NAACP ACT-SO Program. An acronym for Afro-Academic Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics, ACT-SO is a yearlong enrichment program that recognizes, prepares, and rewards African-American youth who exemplify scholastic and artistic excellence.
Enysah was recognized for her research surrounding the role of lipid metabolism and DNA damage-induced cellular processes that drive aging, which she conducted as part of the Hillman Academy, a mentored research program for high school students. Enysah’s research also earned her a first place award in the 2022 Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) regional competition earlier this year.

Enysah presented her research in front of a panel of judges at the Coraopolis ACT-SO Local Competition held at Robert Morris University on April 9. Soon after, Enysah learned the news of her gold medal win and was paid a surprise visit on campus by representatives from the Coraopolis NAACP, who came to present her with her award in person.

“I had just found out I won that morning during homeroom,” shares Enysah. “When I saw Mr. Spruill [President of the Coraopolis NAACP], I knew something was up. I was utterly shocked, however I was also very thrilled to receive this award. I was honestly happy with just being able to showcase my hard work, but earning an award for it was beyond my expectations.”

Please join the Ellis community in congratulating Enysah on her innovative research efforts and exciting achievement!
