Ellis Appoints Three New Trustees to the Board

The Ellis School is pleased to announce the appointment of three new trustees to the Board. Effective July 2021, these new appointments will work with Board Chair, Elizabeth Riordan, to guide The Ellis School’s strategic vision for the future.
Colin Brown
Colin Brown is the Executive Director of Development at the Heinz College of Public Policy and Information Systems at Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to joining Heinz College, Colin was a Vice President in the Wealth Management division of PNC Bank. Colin relocated to Pittsburgh from Columbus, Ohio in 2016 with his wife, Jen Gilbride-Brown, and two daughters, Emma and Lizzie. Colin received his MA from the University of Vermont and BA from Drew University.

Sarah ALTMAN Bumsted McSorley ’95
Sarah ALTMAN Bumsted McSorley ’95 is an educator, alumna of the Class of 1995, and philanthropist. During her professional career, Sarah worked for the NYC Department of Education as a lead special education teacher, mathematics instructional trainer, and mentor in city-operated group homes. As a Special Education Therapist in Bermuda, Sarah developed a consultancy practice partnering with families and teachers of students with complex learning needs. She has also acted as Board Chair of The Lancashire Foundation and served on the founding Board of Directors for Tomorrow’s Voices. Sarah holds a B.A. in Sociology from Hobart & William Smith Colleges, an M.S.Ed in Special Education from Bank Street College and an M.S.W. from Columbia University. Sarah and her husband, RJ, have six children and are both native Pittsburghers.

Ariana Ornelas Smyth, Esq.
Ariana Ornelas Smyth, Esq. is senior counsel with AHN/Highmark Health. In her role as a healthcare lawyer, she is well versed in strategic regulatory and policy advice with respect to federal and state self-referral and anti-kickback laws, Medicare/Medicaid coverage and billing requirements, managed care contracting, health IT privacy and security, and clinical research regulation. Ariana received both her BA in cognitive sciences and JD in law from Harvard University. She is involved in the community by serving on the board of the Women's Law Project and causes related to Puerto Rico given her ancestry. She and her husband Nick Smyth reside in Shadyside with their two daughters, who attend the Lower School. In her spare time, she loves to cook and dance—keeping with her Portuguese and Puerto Rican cultures.
