Ellis Alumna Awarded Fulbright Research Grant

Ellis alumna Maria KOVALCHUK ’10 has been awarded a Fulbright grant to conduct research focused on translation and society in Ancient Rome at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. The United States government’s flagship international educational exchange program, Fulbright grants fund 12 months of international educational experience and facilitate cultural exchange through work in the classroom and in the community.
Maria will conduct classical research under the sponsorship of the Department of Classical Philology at the Ruprecht Karl University of Heidelberg with the goal of working on her dissertation that reassesses the social function and value of translations in Latin literature and Roman society.

A Ph.D. candidate in classical studies in the School of Arts & Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania, Maria is interested in Greek-Latin translation and Hellenistic literature, reception, and literary theory. At Penn, she is also pursuing a graduate certificate in global medieval studies and a teaching certificate. Prior to pursuing her doctorate, Maria earned her bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and her master’s degree from the University of Cambridge, both in classics. She also studied at the American School and the British School in Athens and interned at the Field Museum and the Getty Villa.

"I am delighted by the opportunity to conduct research in Germany,” shared Maria. “As a Ph.D. student in classics, I wouldn't be where I am without the inspiration, support, and encouragement of my Ellis teachers, especially Dr. Jordan who instilled in me the love of—or, more accurately, an obsession with—classical languages and literatures. Dr. Jordan was pivotal in my decision to study the subject at the graduate level. I wanted to be just as brilliant and knowledgeable as her, and inspire the next generation of students."
