Students Recognized with Scholastic Writing Awards

Thirty-six Ellis students have been recognized with regional Scholastic Writing Awards, winning 44 different awards in the Personal Essay & Memoir, Critical Essay, Science Fiction & Fantasy, Short Story, Journalism, and Poetry categories. Every year, students in grades 8 to 12 are encouraged to submit their work to the awards which are the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious arts and writing recognition program. In March, Ellis’ seven Gold Key winners will be considered for national award recognitions.
“The works of this year’s award recipients showcase the diversity of our students’ interests and reading, as well as faculty’s efforts to provide varied writing opportunities,” shared Dr. Anna Redcay, English Department Chair. “Ellis writers are performing meaningful interrogations of both literature and the world from which it arises; they are also crafting works that call on deep personal reflection and creativity. In a year that has posed unprecedented challenges for us all, it is uplifting to see our student authors recognized for the resilience they are bringing to their critical inquiry and creative endeavors.”

For almost 100 years, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have fostered the creativity and talent of millions of students through recognition, exhibitions, publications and scholarships. Alumni of the Scholastic Awards have gone on to continue their education at many of the top colleges and universities across the country. Since its founding, the Awards program has identified the early promise of some of our nation’s most exceptional visionaries, including alumni such as Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Philip Pearlstein, Sylvia Plath, and John Updike, all of whom won when they were teens.
