Student-Athletes Earn WPIAL Field Hockey Honors

Five Ellis field hockey players were awarded spots on the 2020 WPIAL All-Star team in recognition of their athleticism on the field this season. Ilona Bender, Class of 2023, Grayson Honig, Class of 2023, and Tegan Poerio, Class of 2021, were named to the Class A WPIAL All-Star team, and Hannah Rust, Class of 2021, and Zoe Woon, Class of 2023, earned Honorable Mentions. In celebration of these postseason honors, Head Varsity Field Hockey Coach Amanda Rose shares her perspective on this year’s all-star athletes.
Ilona Bender, Class of 2023 – Class A All-Star
Ilona has been a leader on our team since she joined as a freshman. As a young captain this year, she looked to the seniors for guidance but led our defense every game. She is one of the most upbeat and positive players we have, and looking forward I’ve challenged her to find an authoritative voice on the turf.

Grayson Honig, Class of 2023 – Class A All-Star
Grayson has grown into an offensive force this year, putting relentless pressure on the ball at all times. She has developed exceptional off the ball positioning and is always an option for her teammates. She’s a player that’s always striving to be better than she was yesterday.

Tegan Poerio, Class of 2021 – Class A All-Star
Her fourth year on the All-Star team, Tegan is one of the most successful players to come out of Ellis and the WPIAL. She has led our team since freshman year in goals and leadership. She broke the School’s all-time score record as well as the WPIAL. I can’t wait to see her growth on a D1 collegiate team.

Hannah Rust, Class of 2021 – Honorable Mention
Hannah’s growth in four years has been tremendous. Her speed and execution this season led us to the championship. As a captain and leader this year, Hannah’s overall determination and drive as a player is what kept our offense pushing.

Zoe Woon, Class of 2023 – Honorable Mention
Zoe has grown this season with an overall better vision and direction on the field. Her speed on and off the ball has set her apart in the conference. Zoe has helped deny corner opportunities and any attempts to drive down the left side of the field.
