Kathy McMORRAN Murray ’70 Honored at Reunion

The Ellis School is proud to recognize Kathy McMORRAN Murray ’70 with the 2020 Sara Frazer Ellis Award. The award is given annually to an alumna whose achievements represent the Ellis experience and exemplify the School’s mission.
A centennial laureate, former trustee, and stalwart supporter of all-girls education, Kathy graduated from Ellis in 1970, received a B.A. in Mathematics and General Science from the University of Rochester, and earned an Advanced Management Program degree from Harvard Business School. She is principal of McMorran Strategists, LLC, and co-founder of Tech Up for Women, and also takes on roles as a business growth coach, angel investor, and board member. Previously, Kathy held key C-Suite roles in operations, real estate, sales, and marketing at publicly-traded firms and corporations such as Aetna, PwC, and FARO.

Kathy currently resides in New York City with her husband, Alan. She is a Life Trustee at the University of Rochester, Deacon at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, and Chair of HBS (Harvard Business School) Women Association of NY. She is a member of the Harvard Club of New York City as well as the University Club of New York, where she leads the Risk Sub-Committee of Audit. In addition to her lifetime passion of baking, she is also an active squash and backgammon player.

Liz SUCCOP Altman ’70, Kathy’s classmate and longtime friend, shares, “Esse Quam Videri is embodied by Kathy McMorran Murray. She is what she seems; she is completely authentic. With a brilliant and curious mind, Kathy puts her vast knowledge and wisdom to work efficiently and precisely. She zeroes in on the specifics of every challenge and finds the necessary solution. Kathy learned long ago to trust herself and use the powers she developed. Her calm, steady confidence allowed her to climb the corporate ladder her way. Today, she takes her authentic wisdom and works to improve small businesses and female entrepreneurs. She shares all that she has, making her world and those in it better every day. I can't think of a better alumna to receive the Sara Frazer Ellis award.”

Carly REED Carstens ’02, Director of Development and Alumnae Engagement, adds, “Kathy was a natural choice for the Sara Frazer Ellis award due to her lifelong support of Ellis, professional accomplishments, and commitment to supporting women. Her most recent efforts to fundraise and connect her classmates for their 50th reunion is another clear example of why she so deserves this award. With her direction and leadership, the Class of 1970 has raised the largest-ever 50th reunion gift for the School. Her support of the School will impact current students and generations to come.”
