Student Diversity League Acknowledged with YWCA Award

The Student Diversity League at The Ellis School has been awarded a YWCA Racial Justice Award in recognition of their annual student-led diversity conference, Culture Jam. This award for education is given annually to an individual or institution that initiates programs or policies that support equity and inclusion in the greater educational community. Ellis was nominated for the award anonymously and student leaders along with Ciera Young, Director of Equity and Inclusion, will be honored at the Racial Justice Awards Luncheon on November 15.
“It’s wonderful to see adults recognizing our students and the work they put into Culture Jam. In a time when youth are taking charge and leading movements, it’s really powerful to be honored and we are thankful that the YWCA sees our students as agents of change,” said Ms. Young.

In partnership with Ellis, the YWCA hosts diversity-related programming on campus throughout the year and plans to host an adult workshop at this year’s Culture Jam on November 16. The theme of this year’s Culture Jam will be “Allies in Action” and will focus on teaching young people how to be allies and use their passion to create positive change in their communities.

Last year, over 400 high school students traveled from across the Pittsburgh region and three different states to attend the event. Designed to empower students to have courageous conversations, Culture Jam offers a safe, inclusive space for high school students to discuss equity-related issues that are present in schools and the global community.

Congratulations, Student Diversity League!
