Ellis Speech and Debate Team competes in first tournament

Who says that arguing and being dramatic are always bad things? Ellis's newly-formed Speech and Debate Team competed for the first time on Saturday, November 18 when its 12 team members tested their critical thinking skills and powers of persuasion at the Upper St. Clair Novice Tournament.  Ellis sophomores Isabel Brooke and Sanjana Adurty's Public Forum Debate team did exceptionally well, taking sixth place out of approximately 50 teams. Just imagine what these girls will do as they continue to grow and develop as a team.
The team, coached by Upper School teacher David Cerniglia, competed in three different events: Public Forum Debate, Original Oratory, and Duo Interpretation. All of the girls who attended did well and all received positive feedback from the judges.

Competing for Ellis were freshmen Madeleine Mortimer, Alexandra Papernick, and Pallavi Muluk; sophomores Sanjana Adurty, Isabel Brooke, Lauren Drake, and Genell Jasper; and juniors Molly Bair, Alexis Balog, Mackenzie Ferris, Sruthi Muluk, and Claire Priore.

Ellis faculty members David Cerniglia, who teaches Upper School English, and performing arts teacher Jennifer Schaupp served as judges in the competition, as did parents Sherri Ferris and Tracey Jasper. The team competes next at North Allegheny Senior High School on December 18.
