Facebook ate my daughter!

Parenting a daughter in the digital age includes preparing girls for the complex and often confusing world of social media. Even adults with excellent boundaries and time management skills can feel overwhelmed by electronic communications. Imagine how our daughters feel.  On Monday, October 8 at Ellis, Dr. Leonard Sax will focus on the cyber-bubble. His talk for Ellis parents and the public is informally titled "Facebook ate my daughter!" and will provide parents and educators with strategies for helping girls manage the pressures of social media.
To fortify you for this lively discussion, the Ellis Parents Association will provide pizza and soft drinks for adults starting at 6 p.m. Because this event is open to the public, we expect that parking will be tight. Please arrive early to secure a spot. The Armory lot will also be open and thanks to a parking variance, parking will also be permitted on Fifth Avenue Monday evening.

Parents from outside the Ellis community are welcome. Please bring your friends and RSVP here so we have ample refreshments for everyone. Ellis will also provide childcare and pizza for children of Ellis families (we cannot provide childcare for families who are not yet part of our community). Please preregister for childcare here so we can staff our childcare accordingly. The pizza party for kids will take place in the Lower School.

On Tuesday, October 9 from 2 to 3 p.m. Dr. Sax will provide a special talk just to Ellis parents to equip you to respond to those who don’t yet fully grasp the value of girls-only education. Please register for that event here. Dr. Sax will also facilitate in-service for our faculty and will speak to our Upper School girls about the pressures and ethics of social media.

I am grateful to the Ellis Parents Association for funding Dr. Sax’s time at Ellis and to Karen Boyer and our Division Directors for hosting our Girls on The Edge parent coffees. We’ve been amazed by the response to these events. Together with you we can help our girls firmly establish healthy identities—online and in real time—to sustain them while they are at Ellis and long after.

Sincerely,
Randie
