Four Ellis Students Compete in Regional Science Fair

On March 29 and 30 four Ellis students from the Middle and Upper Schools competed at the Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair (PRSEF). To prepare for the competition, students had to prepare and execute a project while using the scientific method. At the fair, they presented their research and findings to a panel of judges. All four students placed in at least one category in the competition. Read about their projects, placements, and awards below:
Viola Haggerty, Class of 2023 - "How Does Temperature Affect Bacterial Growth" won 3rd place in Intermediate Medicine, Health, and Microbiology Division

Eleanor Barth-Wu, Class of 2022 - "Formaldehyde Production in E-Liquid Degradation" won 1st place in Senior Chemistry Division and a special award, the Carnegie Science Center Award

Erika Rispoli, Class of 2022 - "Modeling Bone Tissue Growth" won 4th place award in Senior Medicine, Health, and Microbiology Division and won the Society for Women in Engineering Award

Shivani Watson, Class of 2022 - "Catalytic Oxidation of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds Using TAMLs" in Senior Chemistry Division won five Sponsor Awards:

  • Michael Baker International
  • Society for Analytical Chemists
  • Air & Waste Management
Shivani will also be presenting her findings at the 23rd Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference / 9th International Conference on Green & Sustainable Chemistry in Reston, VA on June 11–13, 2019.

The Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair has been around since 1940 and is the third oldest science and engineering competition in the United States. This year, 1,000 students from over 100 schools competed.
