This course is designed for the mathematically motivated student who plans to take a calculus course (or beyond) as a senior. It is not a make-up or remedial course. This Geometry class covers the material in our full-year Geometry course. Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive one course credit.
Using a guided-discovery approach, students in this course will use compass and straightedge along with dynamic geometry software, The Geometer’s Sketchpad, to explore properties, make and test conjectures, and find connections and relationships within and between geometric figures. Emphasis is on the process of problem solving rather than simply the solutions to problems. A deeper understanding is fostered through the inductive approach and is then strengthened through deductive reasoning and proof writing. Topics include points, lines, planes, angle relationships, constructions, plane figures, circles, the Pythagorean Theorem, similarity, area, and volume.
This course is particularly appropriate for the student who has completed Algebra I and who would like to take an Algebra II course in the next school year. It should be understood, however, that in a summer course, some topics from a yearlong course might be omitted. Each student will be provided with a laptop on which to take notes and do various assignments. Students will be expected to complete one to two hours of homework per night. Quizzes and tests will be take-home and require parental supervision. A final exam will be administered on the last day of the course.
PLEASE NOTE:
- It is recommended that interested students discuss this course option with their current math teacher.
- Middle School students must obtain their math teacher’s signature to be approved for enrollment.
- Each day’s class will cover about one week’s worth of material in a regular class so attendance is crucial. A student may not miss more than 2 consecutive days of class and no more than 3 total days.
MATERIALS:
- Students will need a calculator, a compass, a Geometer (or protractor and straightedge).
- The textbook, Discovering Geometry, will be provided on loan.
