Academics

At The Ellis School girls take intellectual risks, discover hidden talents, and work harder at what’s difficult rather than just sticking with subjects they know best. Ellis is an academically rigorous, urban, independent, college preparatory school for girls age 3 to grade 12. At The Ellis School girls see their peers taking risks, making mistakes, trying again, and succeeding in every aspect of their education from fine and performing arts, to community service, to chemistry and computer science. By example, older girls show younger girls that it's OK to excel in everything, not just in subjects people think of first for girls. The Ellis School is where girls and young women learn to lead.

At Ellis, no subject area is off limits to girls because girls do everything, and find success at the highest possible levels. Here, a girl doesn’t have to choose among being an athlete, or a bookworm, or an artist, or a computer scientist, because it’s normal to be any—even all—of these at once. Differences are celebrated and are a source of discussion and pride because, in our community, more than a third of all students are people of color.

Instead of focusing on appearances, our students focus on action. Ellis fosters a culture where girls of all ages support one another, tackle big issues, and solve problems. In this climate of celebration and accomplishment, girls are comfortable enough to challenge themselves, their teachers, and one another to do more every day. Stretching beyond their limits, our students grow from precocious little girls into strong, smart, engaged young women.
