Ellis at a Glance

Established in 1916, The Ellis School is Pittsburgh's only age 3 – grade 12 independent girls’ school. The campus is located in the East End neighborhood of Shadyside, 5 miles from downtown.

FAST FACTS 2009-2010

  • Total enrollment: 471
  • Upper School enrollment: 183
  • 31% of students and 8 percent of faculty are people of color
  • Over $1 million in aid was distributed for the 2010 - 2011 school year to 30% of students
  • Students come from 70 different zip codes and 41 school districts
  • Student to teacher ratio: 6 to 1
  • Average class size: 12
  • Technology program provides a laptop for each student beginning in grade 8
  • Lower School Library with 12,000 volumes
  • Middle and Upper School Library with 36,000 volumes

COLLEGE ADMISSIONS

  • College counseling begins in the freshman year and 100% of seniors go on to college
  • 20% of the Class of 2010 earned National Merit Scholarships recognition
  • The College Board recognized 59% of the senior class as Advanced Placement Scholars
  • In addition to financial aid, over $1 million of merit aid for college was awarded to the Class of 2010
