STEAM Powered Girls Compete for Grand Championship

Congratulations to the STEAM Powered Girls for an amazing 2016–2017 FIRST LEGO League (FLL) season! The girls headed to the Western PA FLL Grand Championships at La Roche College this past weekend where they competed against local middle school teams in the final event of the year.

The competition started Friday night with the girls presenting their research project, robot design, and season stats to judges. Impressed by their design and programming presentations, the judges gave the STEAM Powered Girls a special recognition in both categories!

Students then took to the table on Saturday for the interactive and unpredictable robot games where teams carried out select missions on the table-top playing field. Even though the girls didn’t place at the Championships, they never lost sight of the big picture and worked together as a team until the end. Their overall season was particularly impressive as they recorded the second highest score in their division for 2016-2017.

Since the beginning of the school year, the STEAM Powered Girls have been fine-tuning and finessing their robot, working on their programming skills, and competing in local scrimmages. This hands-on extracurricular activity encourages the girls to think outside the box and problem solve on the fly. In addition to science, technology, engineering, and math skills taught through FLL, the STEAM Powered Girls learn the fundamentals of sportsmanship and cooperation.

The STEAM Powered Girls showed drive, dedication, and determination throughout the fall season and we couldn’t be more proud of them! Well done, STEAM Powered Girls 2016–2017!
