Four new Trustees join the Board of The Ellis School

The Ellis School is pleased to announce the appointment of four new members to its Board of Trustees: Dr. Janet Edwards Anti, Dr. Anita Courcoulas, Mr. Michael Haggerty, and Ms. Rebecca Upham. Effective July 2015, these new appointees joined 20 other Trustees in guiding The Ellis School in its mission of preparing, empowering, and inspiring girls through an excellent education in an all-girls environment.
Janet Edwards Anti, Ph.D.
Dr. Edwards Anti is a pastor, minister, and leading voice for marriage equality, reform, and acceptance for all. She received her undergraduate degree from Harvard and a M.Div. from Yale Divinity School and earned a Ph.D. in Formative Spirituality from Duquesne University. Dr. Edwards Anti served Community of Reconciliation in Oakland for 27 years in roles including parish associate for contemplative prayer, and one year as co-interim pastor. Ordained to serve as instructor in homiletics and liturgics at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, Dr. Edwards Anti served several churches as pastor. Today she is a parish associate at the Community House Presbyterian Church and is Vice-President of the Pittsburgh Presbytery Foundation. Her blog, www.RevJanetEdwards.com, has led to writing for The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, The Advocate, The Christian Century and BelieveOutLoud.com. She is a 1968 graduate of The Ellis School.

Anita Courcoulas, M.D, M.P.H., F.A.C.S
Dr. Courcoulas is a tenured Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Minimally Invasive Bariatric and General Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). She specializes in minimal access general surgery, abdominal surgery during pregnancy, and high-volume bariatric surgery. She is also the Program Director for the Surgical Fellowship Training Program in Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery at UPMC. Dr. Courcoulas attended Brown University for undergraduate study and earned her medical degree at Boston University School of Medicine. She went on to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where she completed her general surgery internship and residency, a postgraduate research fellowship in pediatric surgery, and postgraduate fellowship in minimally invasive surgery, as well as earned a Master’s Degree in Epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. She is also an Ellis Lower School parent.

Michael Haggerty, M.B.A.
Mr. Haggerty is a Managing Director at The Hillman Company, a private investment company headquartered in Pittsburgh. Mr. Haggerty joined The Hillman Company in 1996 and is a member of the investment team that manages a diverse portfolio of alternative asset strategies including private equity, venture capital, real assets and hedge funds. He also serves as Treasurer for The Sprout Fund. Mr. Haggerty has a B.A. in finance and accounting from The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He also earned an M.B.A. from the Katz Graduate School of Business at The University of Pittsburgh. He is also the parent of an Ellis Lower School student.

Rebecca Upham, M.A.
Ms. Upham has been Head of School at Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, since 2001. Prior to that, she served as Head of School at The Ellis School from 1992 to 2001. While at Ellis, she led the capital campaign that funded projects such as the construction of the Hillman Upper School Building; the renovation and refurbishment of Alumnae Hall; the construction of Janet's Gym; and the purchase of the former Armory property. Prior to Ellis, she was instrumental in the merger of the Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles in the early 1990s. Ms. Upham holds degrees from Columbia University and Middlebury College. She is an active member of numerous nonprofit boards including the Headmasters Association and the Educational Research Bureau, and serves as a Regent for District 1 of the Cum Laude Society.
