Ellis takes 2nd place at Fairchild Challenge

The Ellis School took home numerous awards, including 2nd place overall, at the May 19, 2015 Fairchild Challenge awards ceremony at Phipps Conservatory. The 2nd place award includes $500 for the School's environmental programs. In addition to 2nd place overall, the Class of 2021 received a special merit award for their Eco-Scientist Superhero video directed by Mary Ann Diel. The video featured Wangari Maathai, Kenyan environmental activist and founder of the Green Belt Movement.
Ellis students, all in the Class of 2021, also won these individual honors:
  • Kiera Harrell-Danks: Special Merit award for her poem "Go Outside"
  • Audrey Lyda:  2nd place award for her People and Edible Plants photo essay
  • Catie Summers: Special Merit award for her essay "You, Unplugged"
  • Elsa Tonkinwise: 1st place award for her poem "A Smooth Blue Package" and Special Merit award and Global Challenge finalist for her drawing "Plants & Their Pollinators"
  • Calista Martin-Singer and Fiona Riegert: Global Challenge finalist for their drawing "Plants & Their Pollinators"
The Fairchild Challenge at Phipps connects students back to nature through art, writing, and activism. More than 41 regional middle schools and 3,700 students participated in the challenge.
