Ellis School sets sights on PIAA tournament

After an emotional 1-0 victory over Shady Side Academy in this past Tuesday's WPIAL Class AA Field Hockey championship game at North Allegheny High's Newman Stadium, The Ellis School has set its sights on a first-round PIAA Class AA game against Forbes Road at Latrobe High School.
The championship was the Tigers' fifth in the program's history and first since 2010.

"Hopefully, we'll get one or two days rest and then we'll be right back at it," said team captain Mackenzie Haney, who scored the game's only goal in the first half. "Then, we have to get ready for more difficult opponents in the (PIAA tournament)."

The Tigers could be forgiven for taking a day or two off following a well-played game that ended just before sheets of rain fell on Newman Stadium.

Longtime coach Genny Kozusko was pleased with the goal that came as a result of a penalty corner with 4:25 left in the first half.

"That was nice to see," Kozusko said of Haney's backhand drive that eluded Shady Side goalie Gabby Harchelroad. "She's been working on that all season. It was a nice, smooth, low shot that went in. it's a little deceptive, and I was really happy. It won the game for us."
