Ellis students organize diversity conference

More than 100 students are expected at this year’s Culture Jam, Ellis’s student-led, annual diversity conference for Pittsburgh-area high school students, taking place Friday, November 14. Culture Jam encourages students to consider diversity-related issues affecting young adults, our region, and the global community.
In Culture Jam 2014: Don’t Judge a Book By Its Cover, students will engage in discussions of identity, self-perception, and the perception of others. The student-led workshops will include sessions about interracial relationships and fears of the unknown. Keynote speaker Acharya Vivek Gupta will share his experiences as a Hindu Acharya, or spiritual leader, living in the modern world. Gupta will offer students practical methods for being less judgmental toward others and for managing judgment they may experience from others.

Culture Jam 2014 is organized by Ellis Diversity Club President Sruthi Muluk, a steering committee, and 25 workshop leaders. This year’s workshop leaders include seniors from Central Catholic who are co-facilitating workshops with Ellis students and three seniors from Shaler Area High School.  Ellis expects Culture Jam to attract more than 100 male and female students from parochial, public, and independent area schools, including Central Catholic, City Charter High School, Kiski School, North Allegheny High School, Sewickley Academy, Shady Side Academy, Shaler High School, Taylor Allderdice High School, Valley School of Ligonier, and Winchester Thurston.
