Ellis student leads TEDxYouth event

Ellis senior Sophia Sterling-Angus was so inspired by TED talks that she recruited a team of regional high school students and successfully obtained a TEDxYouth license. This Sunday, September 7 from noon to 6:30 p.m. Sophia and her compatriots will present TEDxYouth@HotMetalBridge at Carnegie Museum of Art to “address the challenges facing the Millennial generation.” They won't just discuss issues: they'll share design thinking methods so that audience members will have tools to confront these challenges in their own lives and communities.
Ellis seniors Heather Harrington, Zoe Merrell, and Korryn Resetar served on the organizing committee.

The event, capped at 100 attendees, is not just at capacity but has a wait-list of 40+ young and young-thinking adults. Recognizing the energy and power of the reaching Millennials in our region, 13 sponsors—including Bayer, American Eagle Outfitters, TechShop, and The Ellis School—have signed on to support the event

Speakers include:
  • Author and filmmaker David Burstein, whose book Fast Future: How the Millennial Generation is Shaping Our World is considered the first book about millennials
  • Carnegie Mellon professor Cameron Tonkinwise, an expert in sustainable growth and design and the sharing economy
  • Teen mental health counselor Tamarah Gehlen who will focus on body positivity, as well as recovery and healing
  • Artist, poet, playwright, and performer Vanessa German will speak about call to action
  • Social media Beth Horn, US Lead for Facebook, will discuss possibility, connection, and optimism
  • Teen scientists CR2 Liam Schumm and Fiona Repp, who are working on coral reef regeneration
