Ellis students in international math competition

Nine Ellis seniors competed in the 2014 HiMCM contest sponsored by the Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications (COMAP), with one Ellis team finishing in the top 6% internationally. COMAP 2014 attracted 5,700 teams from around the world who had 36 hours to respond to one of two questions provided by HiMCM.
The High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM) provides students the opportunity to work as team members in a contest that will stimulate and improve their problem solving and writing skills.  Specifically, this competition requires students to research, operationally define, mathematically model, and quantitatively analyze a real-world problem within a thirty-six hour time period.

The HiMCM competition is highly competitive. The majority of competitors are from exceptional math programs in China. Only 7% of the teams are from the United States. Seniors representing Ellis this year were Nepheli Raptis, Naoka Gunawardena, Nila Ravi, Liz Kysel, Julia Granito, Julia DiPietro, Emily Yaruss, Heidi Miller, and Sarah Wolfe. The two-member Ellis team of Emily Yaruss and Julia DiPietro earned special recognition for their paper detailing how a county should locate three emergency response sites in order to maximize critical care contact within a finite amount of time. Their paper was judged to be among the top 6% of papers submitted.
