ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: DR. JOANN DEAK JoAnn Deak, Ph.D., has spent more than thirty years as an educator and psychologist, helping children develop into confident and competent adults. The latter half of that period has also focused on working with adults, parents and teachers in their roles as guides or ‘neurosculptors’ of children. On her website is a quote that best describes her perspective on her work: “Every interaction a child has, during the course of a day, influences the adult that child will become.”
Parents and educators at schools from New York to Hawaii, as well as such organizations as the National Association of School Psychologists, the National Association of Independent Schools, the Association of International Schools, the American Montessori Society and the International Baccalaureate Association, have heralded Dr. Deak’s ability to demystify complex issues of child development, learning, identify formation and brain research.
Dr. Deak began her career as an elementary teacher and head of the science department. She soon learned the complexity of dealing with the many brain and motivational patterns represented by the diverse students in her classes. This led to her work at Kent State University, one of only three universities in the United States to have a specialty in Preventive Psychology at that time. Her doctoral work focused on how to assess those environmental, school and family patterns that lead to the healthy development of children and, conversely, those patterns that cause issues, problems and disabilities.

In Our Family Exhibit 4/16/2012 to 4/27/2012
Location: Stained Glass Hall
In Our Family is a museum-quality touring photo-text exhibit created by the award-winning Family Diversity Projects, a non-profit organization located in Amherst, MA. This exhibit celebrates families of many kinds, and the photos along with candid interviews with family members of all ages affirm an inclusive and expansive vision of family life today. The exhibit’s purpose is answer the question “What is a family?” The answer reflects an expansive view of what makes a family and moves viewers from intolerance to respect, admiration, and appreciation of all families. It is also meant to lead students to a deeper understanding of their own families and themselves. The images and the text reveal the common thread present in this tapestry of families: love. Along with viewing the exhibit, students in all three divisions will be involved in preparation and/or follow-up activities intended to expand their knowledge of people beyond those in their immediate neighborhood. Classroom activities associated with the theme “families in our community” will be appropriately adapted to different age groups. On Tuesday, April 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the Ellis community is invited to a special event, “Celebrating Our Community”, an evening to view the exhibit and enjoy art works and performances by Ellis students. The exhibit will be displayed for the Ellis community in the stained-glass windows hallway from April 16 to April 27. Brought to you by Ellisians for an Inclusive Community (EFIC) and the Ellis Parents Association (EPA) |
